Things to know for Employers, when installing Cameras / Surveillance Systems at Business Locations

         Securing the premises not only indoors but also surrounding areas has always been a major concern for employers. Video surveillance of events in and around the areas have become important with volatile environments we live these days.

          Security cameras installation has become a key to effective surveillance all over the world. While there are many organisations want to go with but are not sure how to compliant with locals laws while going with any surveillance systems.

         This article deals with general etiquette's to follow on choosing IP Cameras as a surveillance options for India based organisation, as there are no clear laws defined in India that address this issue. Individual privacy laws can be interpreted for organisations to adhere; while deploying the systems, do note IT security acts/laws don’t address this area.

       Places where security cameras installed is the key to effective surveillance. Some areas where security cameras have to be installed and the key benefits of those are listed below:

Surrounding Areas: 

Basements, Parking lot, back area or top of the office building should be monitored to avoid any unauthorised or forced entry into the office, any suspicious activity around the office area can lead to employee safety concerns

Loading Areas: 

For businesses dealing with products, or delivering items to other businesses, warehouses are used to store inventories until the delivery time. Cameras are required at the gates to keep a watch on what items are being moved in and out of the warehouse along with cameras inside to check on staff, operations, and inventory via live video monitoring services. In case of accidents or loss of goods can be verified via recorded videos.

Production Floors: 

Cameras should be installed in all floors to. A well-managed video surveillance service can help do regular audits from the production floor to help managers optimise operations and enforce better productivity from the staff.

Places where money transactions happen: Cash counters and other places where money is handled in an office or a store needs to be monitored carefully. This not only helps to keep an eye on the transaction but also helps in preventing suspicious activities

Server Rooms: 

Server room is an extremely sensitive, it needs a strict supervision and a complete protection from unauthorised access. Live monitoring with real-time alerts are required

Entry & Exit Areas: 

Having a camera installed at the entry and exit gates of an office can be quite useful. This can help check on security guards duties. You can also audit whether the people entering the gate have a proper authorisation to enter or not.

        Many employees do understand their employers' need to monitor the workplace, so they understand the need for employers to install security cameras throughout their establishments. However, they will not accept their most private moments being viewed or recorded

        They expect and demand a certain amount of privacy laws oblige them. In order to install cameras, the business owner must sensitise all employees that they have a reasonable, legitimate business purpose. Furthermore, employer notify its employees that the premises are under surveillance by providing visible notices/stickers/visual displays


                                       Hidden cameras are generally not allowed in any premises

         Employers cannot install cameras in restrooms or locker rooms where people change their clothes. Few countries or few states in the country do not allow cameras are lounge areas do check your laws, India there is no specific law prohibiting it

         Video recording is generally accepted norm for the allowed cameras based on sensitivity of data employer can choose for video recordings Few countries do not allow sound recordings. Recording sound/eavesdropping, is considered illegal. In order to do record sound, the party or parties being recorded, must give their consent.

Know the Law of the land

         If you are a business owner thinking about installing security cameras in your office, you should first familiarise yourself with laws of the land both federal & state laws regarding privacy.

         Do note that state laws vary widely. You can learn about them by contacting the respective departments of Labour

         Employers are always in search of better and more advanced security systems for their organisation. Installation of high tech cameras or just deploying security guards is not going to be enough in current situations.

        Employers must invest time and energy in e-surveillance for office to ensure real-time monitoring for security, prevention of theft of items or sensitive data from office premises. Recorded evidences of intrusion, theft or unforeseen unrest around the premises is paramount importance to organisations as well law enforcement authorities
