Big victims to such attacks are usually Individuals and small businesses, Individuals think that they are behaving responsibly online and are not opening suspicious third party software coming into their mail boxes but one area Small players and individuals are not putting enough effort to secure network (especially routers),

Firewalls & Operating systems advances are always a reactive responses to the Advances in malware and the advent of ransomware – many malicious software that encrypts files and threatens to delete & demand pay a ransom or let go lucrative domain names, twitter handles. Network security is not complicated or difficult, few simple ways; one can increase chances of security protect from a cyber-attack.
Most wireless networks come standard with a WEP protocol. When you enable encryption with a WPA or WPA2 protocol, this is the start of securing network. Without encryption key it is very difficult for anyone infiltrate your network.
Login to your router and update this, all modern routers come with this encryption, if router doesn’t come with encryption plan to replace it as soon as possible
Say NO to ‘Default’ SSID - Change it now
The SSID is the service set identifier for your network. When you set up your network, it will come with a default SSID, like “default” or “admin”. It will also come with a default password (“password” or “admin”), which is also usually printed on back of router.
Make sure to change both SSID and password because a default SSID is what hackers try to use most of the time, they are aware of all manufacture’s default settings. Creating a unique password will further complicate things for would-be attackers (combination of numbers & letter)
One note on choosing a new network name. You do not want hackers to link you with your network. Creating an SSID like, “TheKapoors”, “BelkinRouter” is a bad idea because it gives hackers information about you (your name) that they can potentially use to social engineer their way into your network by contacting your ISP (Internet service provider). Or Provide router details, which can be used to hack in with default passwords of that router models
Always have Strong Password
When choosing a new password, make sure that it is a minimum of 10 characters long and that it includes a variety of letters in different cases, numbers, and/or symbols. This will prevent neighbours from skimming on your Wi-Fi, and it’ll keep hackers from “listening” to the traffic on your network, as well.
EX: Indian car/bike numbers + additional special characters make a real good passwords but ensure to add additional letter and special characters to it (**TS05MF9826)
Keep Firmware Up to Date
Router’s firmware may need to be updated occasionally. Go to web browser and type default IP address of the router to view your router’s dashboard. If there are any updates available, make sure to update. This reduces the security risk also ISPs always work better with updated firmware.
Ex: If you are observing frequent drops, probably firmware upgrade might be causing that
Good to have only wired administration
There’s a setting on your router’s dashboard that allows to perform administrating tasks over the Wi-Fi network instead through LAN cable. Turn this setting off so that hackers cannot remotely access and change administrative details (like your SSID and password) to not only get into your network but also to potentially create multiple SSIDs, monitor your network traffic, control complete network.
Can switch off Network, when not at home (unless you have IOT devices)
There’s no need to have network up and running when no one at home (unless devices are connected with network). Especially on vacations. Turning your router off will disable your network, which will save power and stop hackers from listening network’s traffic.
Choose right router physical location
A lot of people place their routers at the most convenient spot in the house with a telephone or optical fibre cable. These are often next to an exterior wall or window, this might be a major security problem. When you put your router somewhere near the edge of walls that increase the wireless signal range outside. Thus, someone standing or parked on the edge of your property may be able to access network. To make it harder for hackers to receive signal from your router, put it as close to the middle of house. This way reduces signal leak to outside place.
